Distance from people is one of the main lines between basic and advanced drone operations in Canada. Get it wrong and a simple photo flight becomes a violation.
A bystander is a person who is not involved in the operation: passers-by, spectators, people on a beach or in a park. Members of your crew (pilot, visual observer, people you’ve briefed and who are part of the operation) are not bystanders.
| Situation | Basic operations | Advanced operations |
|---|---|---|
| Horizontal distance from bystanders | More than 30 m (100 ft) | Can be closer, within the limits declared for the drone |
| Flying over bystanders | Never | Only with a drone declared for operations over people |
| Advertised events and crowds | SFOC required | SFOC required |
The limits that apply in advanced operations depend on the drone’s safety assurance declaration. A drone without a suitable declaration must be flown as if under basic distance limits.
Microdrones aren’t exempt from common sense. Pilots of drones under 250 g must still avoid flying in a way that endangers people. See microdrone rules.
