Every summer, wildfire crews across Canada have to ground water bombers and helicopters because someone flies a drone over a fire. The rule is simple: if you fly, they can’t.
Transport Canada has stated that, under the Canadian Aviation Regulations, only someone with permission can fly a drone over a wildfire or within 9.3 km (5 nautical miles) of one. Wildfires are treated as automatically flight-restricted areas. Drones of every size are covered.
| Where | Rule |
|---|---|
| Over or within 9.3 km of a wildfire | Prohibited unless authorized |
| Emergency operations (police, fire, ambulance, rescue) | Do not fly near them |
| Disaster sites (floods, earthquakes) | Stay away unless working for responders with authorization |

Car crashes, house fires, police operations and rescues often involve helicopters or require clear airspace. Even if no aircraft is visible, a drone can distract responders or interfere with their own drones. Keep your drone on the ground.
Want to help? Report drones you see near a wildfire to the provincial wildfire line (in B.C., *5555 on a cellphone) or to local police. Leave aerial imaging to the authorized teams.
