The flight review is the practical half of the Advanced drone pilot certificate. A Transport Canada-recognized flight reviewer watches you plan, fly and handle problems. It’s less about fancy stick skills and more about showing that you fly methodically and safely.
| Area | What they look for |
|---|---|
| Planning | Site survey, airspace check, weather assessment, NOTAMs, permissions |
| Pre-flight | Inspection of aircraft and batteries, settings, crew briefing |
| Normal flight | Take-off, hover, controlled manoeuvres, orientation awareness, landing |
| Abnormal situations | Responses to simulated emergencies such as lost link or low battery |
| Decision-making | Recognizing hazards, keeping distances from people, knowing when to stop |
| Post-flight | Shutdown, inspection, record keeping |
Talk through what you’re doing. Reviewers can’t read your mind. Saying “checking airspace, wind and battery temperature” shows your process.
If you pass, apply for your Advanced certificate in the Drone Management Portal. If you don’t, ask for specific feedback, practise those items and book again after the waiting period. Remember that a successful flight review also counts toward the 24-month recency requirement.
